#14 Back in the night

#14 Back in the night – Dr. Feelgood

I well remember the first time I saw Dr. Feelgood. I and a friend (“Boot”) travelled all the way to Cambridge to see them, and weren’t disappointed. It was their first tour (I think it must’ve been about ’75 or thereabouts) of  White Jacket fame and the first time the band were generally known outside of Essex (NME were on their case big time). The show itself was just electric: R&B (the white kind) pub-rock at it’s very, very best. Wilko Johnson was speeding his head off in everyway possible (ironically it was Mick Green who suffered the heart attacks) and when Lee Brilleaux wasn’t pumping out raw blues (either vocals or harp) he was smoking what appeared to be an everlasting fag. The whole show was held together by an exemplary rhythm section (Sparko – John B Sparks – on bass and the Big Figure – John Martin on drums). For further background, band history etc.there’s an excellent BBC documentary floating about (Oil City or something?).

The images here are the covers for the first 2 albums: Down by the Jetty (the 1st) which spawned (amongst others) this single. Malpractice was another studio album which was in turn followed by a live album ‘Stupidity’. I remember buying them all. Those of you who like this kind of music will doubtless agree that the contents of these 3 albums are some of it’s best examples. If you don’t like this kind of music then there’s something deeply wrong with you. Outstanding.

“Back in the night” was the lead single from the first album and released to promote both album and tour. It was unusual as it featured Mr. Collinson on lead (albeit slide) guitar and

Mr. Wilkinson was, for him, quite subdued. Neat enough though.

Lyrics

(by Wilko Johnson, in E-major)

Back in the night I lay down by your fireside
Back in the night you shook me like a landslide
I nearly missed the early shift
Dreamin´ in the morning ´bout the things we did

Back in the night
Back in the night
Back in the night
Back in the night
Beneath your love-light

I woke up on the floor, I asked you for some breakfast
You shoved me out the door, I jumped on to the late bus
I got to smile, I like your style
You put me out this morning but you know that I´ll be

Back in the night
Back in the night
Back in the night
Back in the night
Beneath your love-light

The days go by so slow, I feel just like I´m dying
Stop work whistle blow and then I start reviving
Across your yard, beneath the stars
I made it thru another day and here we are

Back in the night
Back in the night
Back in the night
Back in the night
Beneath your love-light
