#35 Connection

#35 Connection – Elastica

Although the line-up was to change considerably over the years, the original Elastica (by which I mean Onk) was Justine Frischmann and Justin Welch (who were both previously in Suede) plus Annie Holland on bass and Donna Matthews on guitar. The band didn’t have a lot of luck what with one thing and another, although they did enjoy some measure of  success (some might say not as much as they deserved) with several charting singles and the fastest selling debut album  (then).

This track was the subject of a law suit courtesy of Wire which was settled without compensation being paid. I’ve just be re-watching the videos from the mid-nineties and they really did look good, especially if compared to the suga-coated crap that passes for talent these days. First of two songs from Ms Frishchmann to make to this playlist, the best 100 songs of the last 50 years.

Lyrics

Riding on any wave
There is the luck you crave
They don’t believe it now
They just think it’s stupid

So got anything?
Anyone could have done
Who would’ve cared at all
Not you

Another heart has made the trade
Forget it, forget it, forget it
I don’t understand how a heart is a spade
But somehow the vital connection is made

Riding on anything
Anythings good enough
Who would’ve thought it up
Someone like you

Just as they brought me round
Now that they brought you down
Roundabout and roundabout
Who wants a life anyway?

Another heart has made the grade
Forget it, forget it, forget it
I don’t understand how the last card is played
But somehow the vital connection is made
