#46 L.A. Woman

#46 L.A. Woman – The Doors

So, this is the one where it all went wrong – where free spirit, free expression and creative genius became  eccentric behaviour, madness and death. During the 2nd gig of the 2 gig tour to promote the album (their best in my opinion), Morrison lost it and it was time to end live performances. The singer moved to Paris shortly after and there he shall stay forever more.

A very great shame: the doors were a band I never got to see live and would gladly travel back in time to see. By all accounts no-one (including band members) knew what to expect at a Doors gig and each track was extemporised as the wind blew and the whisky flowed, which is of course why there are so many versions of Doors’ tracks floating about. (Incidentally, this is the complete opposite of the Eagles whose every performance was exactly the same as the last one and rounded loathed for that reason.) The title track is a true classic – Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek duel masterfully and Jim Morrison’s vocals keep the track on a musical roller-coaster as only he could. (The entire album is raucous blues at its very best). If you only listen to one Doors track …

Lyrics

Well, I just got into town about an hour ago
Took a look around, see which way the wind blow
With a little girl in a Hollywood bungalow (change)
are the lucky like a little lady in The City of Lights (change)
Or just another lost angel…City of Night
City of Night, City of Night, City of Night, woo, c’mon
L.A. Woman, L.A. Woman
L.A. Woman Sunday afternoon
L.A. Woman Sunday afternoon
L.A. Woman Sunday afternoon
Drive thru your suburbs
Into your blues, into your blues, yeah
Into your blue-blue Blues
Into your blues, ohh, yeah
I see your hair is burnin’
Hills are filled with fire
If they say I never loved you
You know they are a liar
Drivin’ down your freeways
Midnite alleys roam
Cops in cars, the topless bars
Never saw a woman…
So alone, so alone
So alone, so alone
Motel Money Murder Madness
Let’s change the mood from glad to sadness
Mr. Mojo Risin’, Mr. Mojo Risin’
Mr. Mojo Risin’, Mr. Mojo Risin’
Got to keep on risin’
Mr. Mojo Risin’, Mr. Mojo Risin’
Mojo Risin’, gotta Mojo Risin’
Mr. Mojo Risin’, gotta keep on risin’
Risin’, risin’
Gone risin’, risin’
I’m gone risin’, risin’
I gotta risin’, risin’
Well, risin’, risin’
I gotta, wooo, yeah, risin’
Woah, ohh yeah
Well, I just got into town about an hour ago
Took a look around, see which way the wind blow
With a little girl in a Hollywood bungalow (change)
Oh you were like a little lady in The City of Lights (change)
Or just another lost angel…City of Night
City of Night, City of Night, City of Night, woah, c’mon
L.A. Woman, L.A. Woman
L.A. Woman, your my woman
Little L.A. Woman, Little L.A. Woman
L.A. L.A. Woman Woman
L.A. Woman c’mon
