#54 Silver Machine

#54 Silver Machine – Hawkwind

June 1972: I played this single to death – not your typical UK top twenty material it none the less reached #3 (the video didn’t do Stacia justice). In case you didn’t realise, this is yet another song about my favourite subject not something you can experience vicariously, so you either know or you don’t.

As far as I know this was Hawkwind’s only single (certainly their biggest hit by far) – although they released countless albums (and played just as many festivals). I think I saw them in ’75? and I certainly remember seeing an excellent version of Silver Machine performed by Cousin David in Whites around that time. Hawkind was also the first home of Lemmy (via Group X and Hawkwind Zoo), who later found fame as the singer and bass player in Motorhead. I once saw him playing pool in West Runton so I can personally confirm that he’s real. I don’t know if he’s ever written his biography  but it’s definitely one I’d like to read – he seems to have known everyone from Hendrix to Mick Farren (I’ve read he was around the flat in Ladbrook Grove when Farren was writing DNA Cowboys but I’m not sure if one of the Cowboys was based on Lemmy or the other way round).

Lyrics

I
I just took a ride
In a silver machine
And I’m still feeling mean.
Do you wanna ride see yourself going by.
The other side of the sky

I got a silver machine.
It flies side ways thru’ time

It’s an electricline

It’s your Zodiac sign.
I’ve got a silver machine

I’ve got a silver machine.

I said
I just took a ride in a silver machine
And I’m still feeling mean.
It flies
Out of a dream
It’s antiseptically clean

It turns everything green.
Do you wanna ride see yourself going by.
The other side of the sky

I mean a silver machine.

I’ve got a silver machine

I’ve got a silver machine.
