#56 Teenage Kicks

#56 Teenage Kicks – The Undertones

John Peel’s best pop song of all time (it was played at his funeral and the lyric “teenage dreams so hard to bear”  is carved on his gravestone), Teenage Kicks was the first hit from The Undertones (largely due to Peel playing it on his show). Released (or re-released) in October ’78, it was sort of tacked on to some later releases of their first album as a ‘bonus track’, which initially made it difficult (or at least awkward) to get hold of. None the less it soon achieved legendary status, in part because it’s so easy to play (i.e. cover).

Personally, I liked the 2nd Undertones album more (not to detract from the 1st) but this track has got to be in anyone’s best of list. Immortal stuff.

Lyrics

Are teenage dreams so hard to beat
Everytime she walks down the street
Another girl in the neighbourhood
Wish she was mine, she looks so good

I wanna hold her wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night

I’m gonna call her on the telephone
Have her over ’cause i’m all alone
I need excitement oh i need it bad
And she’s the best, i’ve ever had

I wanna hold her wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night

I wanna hold her wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night

(Repeat Once)
