#57 I Fought The Law – The Clash

Originally written by Sonny Curtis (who recorded it with the post-plane-crash Crickets), I think it’s fair to say that it’s the version from the Clash that everyone remembers, although it was famously covered by the Bobby Fuller Four (there’s an article at http://www.kellyhogan.com/bands/rock/fuller.html if you’re interested). The version from the Clash was recorded in ’78 (though not properly released until may ’79) and they performed it at a gig in december that year at the lyceum and video from that part of the gig was used in the
movie Rude Boy – I think that’s right!

The song was also used by the CIA (an organisation with a morbid sense of humour if ever there was one) to stop journalists overhearing their negotiations with Noriega (PSYOPS being the most versatile of all forms of warfare).

All in all a song with an interesting past and … how many beats in a six-gun Freddy?

I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the

Guess my race is run
She’s the best girl that I ever had
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the

I fought the law and the law won (7 times)
I fought the law and the
