#60 Back in the USSR

#60 Back in the USSR – The Beatles

Oddly enough, this is the only Beatles track in this entire list. I like the Beatles so I can’t think why that should be – perhaps there are just too many total classics to choose from.

Anyway, this is the song that made it: Back in the USSR. I guess they’re people these days who might not know what USSR stands for but they’ll just have to look it up …

The song was written by Lennon/McCartney (primarily Paul) in ’68 and was first recorded as a track on the White Album and later released as a single in ’76. When this was written, it was the time of the infamous I’m Backing Britain Campaign (started by office workers in Surbiton who started to work overtime for no pay – to help the economy … surprise, surprise it didn’t work but why not try it again …) which was soon picked up by Harold Wilson, about whom the Beatles had mixed opinions to say the least. Paul is often quoted as saying the track was a parody/tribute to the Beach Boys (all that California stuff) and Chuck Berry (Back in the USA) as well as being a culture-reversal type of thing (I seem to remember him getting a bit carried away in an interview something about the “kids” in Russia liking the Beatles being essential to the continuance of the human race?).  Still they were learning TM at the time from the MahMan himself (and in those days they weren’t limited to 20 mins twice a day) so it’s a wonder they could hold a pencil between them.

Lyrics

Flew in from Miami Beach BOAC
Didn’t get to bed last night
Oh, the way the paper bag was on my knee
Man, I had a dreadful flight
I’m back in the USSR
You don’t know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the USSR, yeah

Been away so long I hardly knew the place
Gee, it’s good to be back home
Leave it till tomorrow to unpack my case
Honey disconnect the phone
I’m back in the USSR
You don’t know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the US
Back in the US
Lyrics

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the west behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
They Georgia’s always on my my my my my my my my my mind
Oh, come on
Hu Hey Hu, hey, ah, yeah
yeah, yeah, yeah
I’m back in the USSR
You don’t know how lucky you are, boys
Back in the USSR

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the west behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
They Georgia’s always on my my my my my my my my my mind

Oh, show me round your snow peaked
mountain way down south
Take me to you daddy’s farm
Let me hear you balalaika’s ringing out
Come and keep your comrade warm
I’m back in the USSR
Hey, You don’t know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the USSR
Oh, let me tell you honey
