#70 Go Buddy Go – The Stranglers

If you’re too young to have ever seen the Stranglers, you missed a treat. I saw them several times and was never disappointed. I remember that at the end of one gig (at St. Andrew’s Hall in Norwich England), there was an announcement over the PA asking everyone to
leave together as a coach-load of skinheads from Leeds had just arrived to beat everyone up. If you don’t know England, this represents a journey of several hundred miles! Perhaps Leeds Utd. had just been beaten by the local football team (again), the announcer didn’t go into details. Suffice to say the whole street was cordoned off for 100 metres in every direction and there was a pitched battle, which the police (wisely) contented themselves with merely watching (this was pre-miners strike tactics).

I also have fond memories of this particular track as we (we being an early excuse for a band ‘The Cringe’ as I recall) played it to audition at the Shrub, the bass-player playing through his dad’s stereo-gram. I’d decorated an old school blazer for the occasion using gold paint which of course I hadn’t left to dry properly and which proceeded to leave a mirror-image on the seat of the drummer’s dad’s capri. Punk eh! I’m not sure if this was ever a single or not … maybe it was a double-A side with Peaches? (I know I definitely had the sheet music). Now, many years later, the energy still bursts through the song and the sulphate is ringing in my ears. Go Buddy Go.

Lyrics

Boogie woogie

The boys and the girls are all dancing around
Dancing all night to the crazy sound
It’s the newest thing to hit this land
The boys and the girls are all holding hands

I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go

I’m with my friend Bob having a good time
I’ve got me some speed and I’m doing fine
But Bob is not dancing no sir-ee
He’s got a likely eye on a little lady

I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
What I say?
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go

Yeah boogie now Dave…

Elbow rooming his way around the floor (oh)
You can see him he’s sitting by the door (oh)
All the chickies they wanna see him dance some more
(ONE TWO THREE FOUR)

Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go

I see we’re changing partners, but that’s not for me
I notice Bob isn’t joining the party
He’s standing on the outside, looking in
Wishing that little chickie was with him

I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go

The party is over and we’re all going home
I can’t find Bob so I’m leaving alone
But wait a minute, who is that, I can see?
None other than Bob with that girl on his knee

I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
Tell me now
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
Boogie

Yeah
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
What I said?
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
One more time
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
