#75 Riders on the Storm

#75 Riders on the Storm – The Doors

I used to hitch-hike myself quite a lot (in the seventies), but that was in Britain, France, Belgium, Holland and places further (but not too much further) west. Where it wasn’t, was the US, so I don’t know … maybe Jim Morrison really did feel like all that crap he wrote about, maybe he really was a ‘rider on a storm’ –  this is for sure: not long after this track was released (see the entry for LA Woman), Jim Morrison was dead. I’d have to say that I lean towards the opinion that if you do enough whisky and/or drugs, you’re going tits up sooner rather than later whether you hitch or go first-class. Whatever. Anyway, back to the song: there are as many ‘facts’, opinions, comments and ‘background information’ about, on and of this track on the internet than there are about Kennedy’s assassination (www.songfacts.com has a fair selection). I just like it for the same reasons, I like the rest of the album: Ray Manzarek’s keyboards, Morrison’s vocals, and Robbie Krieger’s guitar playing (no disrespect to John Densmore) … all of which come together to prove once and for all that you can go out with a bang.

Lyrics

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out alone
Riders on the storm

There’s a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin’ like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If ya give this man a ride
Sweet memory will die
Killer on the road, yeah

Girl ya gotta love your man
Girl ya gotta love your man
Take him by the hand
Make him understand
The world on you depends
Our life will never end
Gotta love your man, yeah

Wow!

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out alone
Riders on the storm

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
