#90 The Only One I Know -The Charlatans

As Samuel Johnson might have said (had he been reviewer of pop-songs): This song is both good and original, but the part that is good is not original and the part that is original is not good.
‘The Only One I Know’ features a wonderful Hammond organ riff ripped from the Deep Purple track ‘Hush’ and  a couple of lines of Byrd-song (presumably adding them to the list of people who’ve been burned) – well the band is called the Charlatans. I guess that’s what’s called eclectic – although not if you happen to own an offy. In the charts for about 4 months wasn’t it?

Lyrics

The only one I know, has come to take me away
The only one I know, is mine when she stitches me
The only one I see, has found an aching in me
The only one I see, has turned her tongue into me

Everyone has been burned before, everybody knows the pain

The only one I know, never cries, never open her eyes
The only one I know, wide awake and then she’s away
The only one I see, is mine when she walks down our street
The only one I see, has carved her way in to me

Everyone has been burned before, everybody knows the pain
Everyone has been burned before, everybody knows the pain

Everyone has been burned before, everybody knows the pain
Everyone has been burned before, everybody knows the pain
