#92 Rebel Rebel

#92 Rebel Rebel – David Bowie

Were you to choose one Bowie song for a top 100 (obviously ‘Heroes’ is already there by default), I guess this might not seem to be an obvious choice. I can’t remember now if the version I have was the original single (I think not) or from Diamond Dogs or whatever … there’s a lot of contrast in it … a very quiet intro and then the guitar (Bowie presumably) comes in with a single power bend (apposite).

I couldn't find one unair-brushed

The era when this single did come out was very much a time of ‘riffs’ and of course this song has one (I remember the fuss re: Jean Genie v that Sweet one Blockbuster was it? – unlike Chinn and Chapin to get caught with their hands in the till so I suppose it must have just been co-incidence even though they did both chart at the same time). The lyrics caused a modicum of sensation at the time but it was all getting pretty old even then. Mick Ronson and the soon-to-be Duke had parted ways by now … Bowie to fascist controversy and Ronson to a tour bus (however pretty the paint-work, it’s still a bus, Mick!). Over the years the Bowie I still remember best was contained into a couple of pirated cassette tape (which can from where I do not know): one featuring extracts from the Last Sonny & Cher Show and the other one had extracts from Star Trek, something about witches and God knows what else (sort of like ‘Future Games’ but more so), I think it was just called the ‘Thin White Duke’ but that could have just been something someone wrote on the tape. Anyway they disappeared in the mists of Waller Road (probably in John Swannell’s pocket – the bastard … mutter, mutter shwork kwork …)

Lyrics

Doo doo doo-doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo-doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo-doo doo doo doo doo

You’ve got your mother in a whirl
She’s not sure if you’re a boy or a girl
Hey babe, your hair’s alright
Hey babe, let’s go out tonight
You like me, and I like it all
We like dancing and we look divine
You love bands when they’re playing hard
You want more and you want it fast
They put you down, they say I’m wrong
You tacky thing, you put them on

Rebel Rebel, you’ve torn your dress
Rebel Rebel, your face is a mess
Rebel Rebel, how could they know?
Hot tramp, I love you so!

Don’t ya?
Doo doo doo-doo doo doo doo doo

You’ve got your mother in a whirl ’cause she’s
Not sure if you’re a boy or a girl
Hey babe, your hair’s alright
Hey babe, let’s stay out tonight
You like me, and I like it all
We like dancing and we look divine
You love bands when they’re playing hard
You want more and you want it fast
They put you down, they say I’m wrong
You tacky thing, you put them on

Rebel Rebel, you’ve torn your dress
Rebel Rebel, your face is a mess
Rebel Rebel, how could they know?
Hot tramp, I love you so!

Don’t ya?
Oh?

Doo doo doo-doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo-doo doo doo doo doo

Rebel Rebel, you’ve torn your dress
Rebel Rebel, your face is a mess
Rebel Rebel, how could they know?
Hot tramp, I love you so!

You’ve torn your dress, your face is a mess
You can’t get enough, but enough ain’t the test
You’ve got your transmission and your live wire
You got your cue line and a handful of ludes
You wanna be there when they count up the dudes
And I love your dress
You’re a juvenile success
Because your face is a mess
So how could they know?
I said, how could they know?

So what you wanna know
Calamity’s child, chi-chile, chi-chile
Where’d you wanna go?
What can I do for you? Looks like you’ve been there too
‘Cause you’ve torn your dress
And your face is a mess
Oh, your face is a mess
Oh, oh, so how could they know?
Eh, eh, how could they know?
Eh, eh
