#74 Female of the Species

#74 Female of the Species – Space

An odd song this. I’d previously supposed (previously before about 15 minutes ago) that Space were the proverbial one-hit-wonder but it would seem (courtesy of http://www.spacetheband.com) that they’ve released more content than I’ve had hot dinners – although to be fair, I’m pretty thin. Anyway, back to the point, this is a very catchy song with an obvious lyrical hook (based on the refrain from the poem of the same name by Rudyard Kipling  – a person who undoubtedly knew more about spiders than he did about women) and everything …works. It feels good and makes you feel good, even though the lyrics out of context are a tad dreary. Released in May 1996, it became my personal soundtrack to the summer for all kinds of reasons, most of them centring around Golders Green. A staple with movie-makers and ad-men alike, this is by far and away the band’s zenith.

Lyrics

A thousand thundering thrills await me
Facing insurmountable odds gratefully
The female of the species is more deadly than the male

Shock shock horror horror
Shock shock horror
I’ll shout myself hoarse for your supernatural force
The female of the species is more deadly than the male

Oh she deals in witchcraft
And one kiss I’m zapped

Oh how can heaven hold a place for me
When a girl like you has cast a spell on me
Oh how can heaven hold a place for me
When a girl like you has cast a spell on me

Frankenstein and dracula have nothing on you
Jekyll and Hyde join the back of the queue
The female of the species is more deadly than the male

Oh she deals in witchcraft
And one kiss I’m zapped

Oh how can heaven hold a place for me
When a girl like you has cast a spell on me
Oh how can heaven hold a place for me
When a girl like you has cast a spell on me

Oh how can heaven hold a place for me
When a girl like you has cast a spell on me
Oh how can heaven hold a place for me
When a girl like you has cast a spell on me
